Gokarna is a small temple town on the west coast of India. People come here only for two reasons – pilgrimage or a relaxing beach vacation. The main attraction is the non-commercialized experience and refreshing beach locations. It’s raw, grimy and bit shoddy, but it grows on you and does strange things to your mind. Om, paradise and few other beaches with its abundant bohemian inhabitants, will surely let you experience hippie culture!
2. HAMPI, KARNATAKA
Hampi, also known as Hampe or Humpi, is a village situated in North Karnataka. With hippies pouring from all over the world, there’s a community that has made the place its own. Hampi is well known for its historical beauty, but as you can see, it’s not far behind when it comes to its hippie culture either. It is a mysterious contrast and there’s something extremely enigmatic about it. Among various other interesting attractions, don’t miss the Royal Enclosures, Monolith Bull, Anegundi Fort, Old Palace and of course, the Hampi Bazaar.
3. ALMORA, UTTARAKHAND
This little town in Uttarakhand is full of temple and beautiful nature to relax for hours. Being at a high altitude, a very high quality of cannabis is produced here. It is the home of the famous “Crank’s ridge” or the Hippie Hill, that has seen the likes of Allen Ginsberg, Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens at the peak of the Hippie movement back in the 60s. The serene nature makes this place a favourite destination of nirvana seekers around the world.
Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, uttarakhand, this place is where you should be if you just want to chill out and let go of the world. As known as the yoga capital of India, – yoga ashrams and cafes sprouting side by side, every other day. It’s a place where the Beatles spent the late 1960’s writing 48 songs, mostly on the White Album at the now famous ashram of Yogi, Maharishi Mahesh. Essentially a very spiritual place, Rishikesh is the place where hippies flock to immerse themselves in the Zen feeling that is overflowing in this city.
5. ALLAPUZHA (ALLEPPEY)
Kerala has few of the best places ever, and Alleppey is just one of them. It is one of those fantastic towns where days can drift by while relaxing with a good book and watching happy village life flow by in front of you. We recommend that you stay in a guesthouse along the backwaters for at least one or two nights. Take this opportunity to kick back and relax in one of the most chilled out places in India. The backwaters are a quiet balm, and the cool currents massage all your soreness away. It’s a bit of magic, with an awesome vibe to match.
6. KASOL & TOSH
In the arms of the valleys of Himachal Pradesh, lies the cozy green villages of Tosh & Kasol. In the valley the gorgeous Parvati River flows by, you might come across a handful of pot-smoking babas in this beautiful Himachal village. It’s a heaven for all the hippies. And is quite cheap for both accommodation & creamy stuff. You will find many Israeli hippies that have settled here.
This lovely hamlet is a huge draw on the rave circuit. So if you like your trance and EDM, take that bus up to the mountains, and bring on the music. It’s all ‘natural’ in the end, and that’s why we love it.
7. NUBRA VALLEY
A little north east of Ladakh lies the gorgeous Nubra valley. It’s the land where you can view the best sunsets in the world, time actually pauses for months, and the blue skies merge with the rivers. It’s unreal to imagine such beauty in the coldest desert region of the country, but it’s mind boggling to just sit and absorb all this gorgeousness in one go. Sometimes you do feel you’re inside a dream within a dream, where the blue is so blue that you go dizzy just looking at it.
Also known as “Hippy Haven”, the small trippy village located along the backwaters and gentle hilly slopes of Kerala. The Varkala Beach is a home to a large number of expats and hippies. No one will disturb you here because no one cares; and, you can head to the shacks or cafes for food. So, find a corner on the spectacular beach, maybe under one of those tall palm trees and drift away in your own world while listening to some serene trance music.
The golden city has its own charm and magic. The city is famous for its rich culture, heritage and royal forts. You can actually live inside the fort and experience the (in)famous Rajasthani lifestyle. You also really need to go to the desert. There is something infinite about the desert, the warm wind, and the patient animals. Wading through the sand dunes and lying down on your back is something else, when you know the next city is miles and miles away.
10. VATTAKANAL, KODIAKANAL
It’s not just the mountains of Himachal that invoke the Boom Shankara in the hippie traveler of India. A hill station situated in the heart of Tamil Nadu, a half an hour run from Kodaikanal is vattakanal. It is known for israelis & magic mushrooms. this can take you too “High”. Vattakanal which is famous for its all-night long rave parties, mostly powered by the famous Kodai ‘shrooms.
There is no right or wrong way to travel like a hippie. There is no strict rule in favour of the use of hallucinogens and beads. All you have to do is try to step out of the boundaries created by others, and find yourself anew. Your luxury tours can wait for some other time. It’s time to travel like a hippie!
